About Map 507

This is the third in the series of "winter maps," and features an eastern shoreline with several peninsulas and inlets as well as a number of small coastal villages. The terrain is hilly and glaciated, with a fair number of eskers and drumlins throughout the region.

Winds are presumed to have stripped away most of the snow along the peninsulas, leaving behind a hard, frozen ground. This is indicated by the flecks of color, indicating ground texture and is coded as Rough 1 with a sprinkling of Rough 2.

The pure white areas are considered deeper snow and are coded as Rough 2.

The snow is deeper still along the eastern side of the snow-covered hills (built up drifts driven by winds) and are coded as Rough 3. The hills that are not deeply covered in snow (colored texture) remain as Rough 1 and 2.

Towns are coded as Rough 2. Where roads pass through towns they are coded as "roads," otherwise they are coded as a 50/50 mix of Rough 1 and Clear terrain.

There is a "lighthouse" at the end of the peninsula at UTM 107054, coded as "town." It is also coded as high ground.

The northern and central rivers are deep and uncrossable toward their mouth, but shallow and fordable (crossable) upstream near their source. The portion that is shallow is coded as Rough 3. The river whose source is off-map to the south is not crossable at any point.

There is an ice flow in the northeastern corner of the map that is just barely navigable by landing craft. (Very narrow channels of water). The ice patches themselves are coded as Rough 2.

The trees are meant to be sparse woods made up of mid-sized pine trees. They are coded as Rough 2.

The fastest terrain on this map are the streets in the towns (which are considered plowed) and are coded as roads. All other roads are considered snow-covered but hard-packed and are coded as a mix of Clear Terrain and Rough 1, which is only slightly faster, over distance, than the windswept coast (coded as Rough 1 with some random Rough 2). The large piers in the town at UTM 071016 are coded as "clear."

There is a small civilian airfield at 023083. This is intended to be either a seasonal airfield that is closed down during the winter or an all-season airfield that does not get much use. The runways are coded the same as the surrounding snow-covered terrain, as Rough 2. The "tower" at 021081 is coded as high ground.
