This map depicts Dansville, NY (pop. 6,000) with a nearby airport, both in a valley. Much of the rest of the map is higher elevation. Area is a mix of woods and roads, with fordable streams.

SUMMARY
=========
Streams and creeks are small but fordable.

Primary (all weather, hard surface) and Secondary (highway, all weather, hard surface) roads are shown wider and darker. The westernmost north/south primary road is US Interstate 390.

Light-duty roads (all weather, improved surface) are shown narrower and with less contrast. Though they do not all intersect the primary roads in reality, in this map it is assumed that all roads connect where they meet. The movement cost is the same for all roads.

Actual terrain is quite hilly and LOS and movement between hills is difficult. This is not reflected in the map. 250m MSL is depicted as E0. Elevations up to 400m MSL surround the area.

The hills are quite steep in some areas, making off-road travel up them difficult. This is shown by small inverted "v" symbols on the map. These areas have Rough 2 terrain.

There is a manufacturing facility west of the airport.

A railroad is shown and treated as Rough 1 in the map.

DETAILS
=======
This map depicts Dansville, NY based on topographic maps, aerial photos and direct observation. Dansville is a town of 6,000 people with light and heavy manufacturing. It is located 90 kilometers south of Rochester, NY, in the western end of the Finger Lakes region in west/central New York State. Created by Darius Kasinskas, October, 2000, Version 100. AIRPORT: Road
---------------

BUILDINGS: Misc LOS Block where large or dense
-------------------
Smaller houses are ignored. Large buildings outside Dansville village that are much more noticeable (at least two floors and perhaps a hundred meters long, or densely grouped) are shown as black areas and act as Misc LOS Blocks. Examples are the firehouse at 078130, the cluster of houses at Reeds Corners 078111, the large farm and silos at West Sparta Station 033133, and the prominent Foster Wheeler Energy Corporation buildings 043082 west of the airport.

Foster Wheeler Energy Corporation (prominent buildings west of airport 043082) http://www.fwc.com/pow_services/scr/services/dansville.cfm The Dansville FWEC plant supports the manufacture of pressure part components for utility, industrial and circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) steam generators. Primary products fabricated in Dansville are waterwalls, superheaters, reheater and economizer coils, and steam drum headers. Railroad facilities enable product shipment throughout North America and are connected to ocean vessel terminals for worldwide distribution. Smaller components are shipped by truck. The plant has five bays totaling over 500,000 square feet in covered area.

CORN: Misc LOS Block/R1
----------
Corn is 1.5m or more high in October - dry husks that block LOS but only slightly impede travel. Corn only appears in the northern valley and is shown by a yellow color.

From surrounding E0 terrain, and from E1 hilltops, there is an easy LOS into and across the cornfields. In the Tacops map, however, the corn field provides a complete block of LOS.

HILLS: E0/E1
----------
The hills surrounding the valley floor are about 300 meters high. Terrain within 75 meters elevation of the valley floor are coded as E0. Transitions to higher terrain are sudden, and the map reflects this well. There are many hills in the E1 area, and these are not explicitly shown in the two-level Tacops model. However, the hillsides are typically covered with woods, and so the LOS factors in Tacops are similar to those in actuality.

LANDMARKS: No unique movement cost.
----------------------
Cemetaries are shown for reference only and do not affect the Tacops engine.

RAILROAD: R1
------------------
The railroad does not obscure LOS. In the area of corn, it and the dirt roads provide the only clear LOS. Travel along the railroad is slower than along clear or road areas.

ROADS: Road
------------
Broadly, roads fall into three categories, almost independent of road type. The least favorable road supports 30km/hr vehicle movement, so all are coded as road.

On the print map, roads are designated the letters "I" (Interstate), "NY" (New York) or "CR" (County Road) followed by a number.

There is a road from roughtly 000111 to 000095 that has been removed from the map, as most of the road lay partially hidden by the map-edge frame.

STEEP SLOPES: R2
---------------------------
Steep areas are about 25% gradient. These areas are denoted by inverted "V" marks, white over black. There is no compounding effect of steep and woods, and so in wooded areas, steep marks are never shown.

WATER: R2/R3
-------------
Creeks apparently have a low volume flow rate - not presenting any current problems for infantry or vehicles.

Most creeks seem less than 30cm deep, with reasonable banks. These are R2.

Canaseraga Creek appears less than 1m deep, so vehicles can ford, but infantry is definitely slowed down. This is R3 in the north, R2 in south.

This water has no effect on the city or roads, as there are numerous and adequate bridges.

Where creeks are in woods and city, they are not shown (their terrain effect is R2).

Bridges in the north central portion of the valley are limited to 9 tons, so most military vehicles cannot use them (however, infantry and HMMWV are okay). These bridges are not shown; the road does not cross the creek at these points.

WOODS: Woods/R2
--------------
Woods have trees that are at least 10cm across, spaced every meter or so. LOS is typical Tacops.
